Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)

Do you remember Michael Jordan? Sure, who would have not hear about him… At least my own or older generations. Even if you were not interested in basketball you have for sure, given you have lived in that period, heard that name (and maybe if you were younger you had an opportunity to mistake him with Michael Jackson ;) ). He was a hero of the movie, in which by playing a basketball match he had to save the world of the Looney Toones. This year in cinemas was released a second part, reboot or… I don’t know. New version? Something like that ;)

This time LeBron James was a sportsman-hero. Let me say – as a person hardly form the circle of sport like basketball, I know him only from his last name. I have no idea what are his achievements. I don’t know who were his competitors and so on. But let me assure you, the movie is made to have fun – even when you are a layperson like me ;)

The story goes like that: LeBron James has achieved very much from his hard work. That makes him not very tolerant to his sons’ mistakes. He wants to teach them to work hard for their own success. ‘Once upon a time’ he gets an invitation to the Warner Bros studios – where some surprise awaits for him. Now he has to play a match for the stake similar to the one from the first movie. Or even greater…

Maybe that’s enough about the story. Different times of movie’ creation are visible at every step. What was animated, became computer generated. And what was a pretty good house of the protagonist, became a great mansion. Everywhere is technology, fireworks and waterfalls of bells and whistles. Even the titular match was… Yeah. Rocked out. The story threads became very numerous at some point – and their conclusion was very quick. Maybe given all of this there was lost something important for that kind of story. It’s narration. Some of it’s vital points are just shown and then they have an impact on heroes decisions. I mean that everything goes a little too fast. Even a Looney Toones world episode ends too fast and it’s a pity. And even if a movie lasts for almost two hours, leaving the cinema I ended up with a kind of dissatisfaction. I understand the meaning of the story (it’s hard not to). I have a feeling that it was presented in a way for kids, in a movie a little too hard for them. As if it’s creators wasn’t able to decide for who it is. For example there were notices about Pennywise on the match audience… And he’s not an ordinary clown… Effects are one thing. It’s good they are here. But again, there are a bit too much of them. I think it would be better to focus on some part of the threads, rather than trowing them all and making a movie out of them. It’s not a series, but a full movie. There is a place to get carried away in terms of the threads development – and it was something I was longing for here.

And I got a bit carried away with a criticism here. What were the thing I liked in the Space Jam? There were some very valuable story threads. That’s for sure. The graphical effects themselves too are of the high tier. And the Looney Toones appearance is always a good idea ;)

When I was leaving the cinema (I know I already mentioned that…) I had a problem. I had remembered the first part, I had watched it on a DVD not too long ago. I was entering the cinema with high hopes for a good continuation. Mentioned faults make me think I will put a Bugs Bunny figurine beside his other figurine, from the first Space Jam, rather than buy a DVD and put it on my shelf. I will remember the story’s outcome, I will remember the heroes development, which were there and which I saw. But will I remember the movie? Maybe as a curiosity – and as a second part for my little, personal legend from my childhood :)

Final Grade: Hands up, slam the ball!
