Birdy – Young Heart (2021)
Have you got a feeling sometimes, that the world nowadays is running like crazy? Have you ever got an urge to stop? To enjoy a moment, that is now? If yes, I feel like the new Birdy album is just for you ;)
I heard about Birdy from – how could it be another way – YouTube. I found there some of her songs, including ‘Skinny Love’. The first version was, I could even say, childish. But another one seized my heart. And then was one of my favorite albums in my collection, ‘Fire Within’. And now, this yer, I became an owner of her newest album.
It won’t be a surprise if I say that Birdy sings about love. But when said ‘Fire Within’ was more energetic and spontaneous, this time the artist proposed us something completely different. You can find here many calming melodies, but not boring. I can point out to my favorite one, ‘Ligthouse’. Let the refrain speak: „Will you be my lighthouse? / When I call out your name / Show me the way / Will you be my lighthouse? / Will you shine out? / Show me the way”… Beautiful, isn’t it?
There was a place for another side to, a darker one – in example in a song ‘Loneliness’ Birdy as a lyric heroine sings that she dreams about said loneliness, because she is in a relationship that hurt her. Tin both cases the artist’s voice is so mellow that I had to read the lyrics, because I thought the second one is about happiness, not seeking it in being alone… I can’t of course tell you about all the topics that are present in her songs. What I can tell is that I hear her form speakers, my heart gets to sway to the rhythm of her voice. It’s a great recognition :)
One of the upsides of the album is it’s length – it’s as far as 14 full-length songs, an intro and an interlude song. Really, there is something to choose from! Especially that it lasts for almost an hour. I like when musicians respect my time spent with their creations. I don’t mean that I paid for the CD – but that I draw pleasure from listening to it. I would feel uneasy if forced to listen to the same thing for too long – even if that particular CD spend like two weeks or more in my drive. I like when quantity means quality, too. And here we have both :)
Even if those are not the rhythms I knew and liked from the previous Birdy album (‘Light Me Up’!), this CD got a special place in my collection. The music is calm, silent, good not only for evening after hard day at work. And most importantly it’s not about flaunting with faulty morals… Even if from a CD cover Birdy smiles to us while hiding her mouth, we can – as listeners of her music – smile to her without those limitations. Because what she did is simply worth it :)
